CHKISTCHURCH.
(From yesterday's OtnUrbunj Times.) GBAtN AND PRi'DCTE. What we wrote last week with reference to. the state of the market is now more pertinent than ever. We have to record an almost total abstinence of business, as both buyers and. sellers seem indisposed to give way. There is no donbt the prevailing unsettled feelmsr restricting operations is in a measure heightened bv the nncertamty of affairs in Europe. With a settlement one way or the other it is fully expected values will become determined, and the present inaction disappear. Wheat.—Thereis nothing doing, and sales have been extremely limited. We repeat last week's quotations of 4s 3d to 4a 5d for average J for choice; 4s 6d to 4s fid. Oats do-not present any change. Any offered find buyers at 3s Sd to 3a 9d. Bartey.—The demand for good samples continues unabated. 5s to 5s lid can be readily zot description. Other kinds are saleable in proportion. Floor.—A considerable business has been done at Lll to LIS. Grass Seed.—We have no alteration to report beyond * less Hrm tone. Most of the orders have been filled, and purchases are now principally being made to hold. Prices In consequence have receded. First-class samples we quote at 6a 3d; average lots, 4s 9d to 5s 6*d. . Potatoes. —The demand is not at all brisk. There are orders in the market, but not at sellers* ideas. The price ranges from 403 to 42s bM. T „ , Dairy Produce. —Butter is very dull, and tale* hard to make. Most of the deals laiely have been in the way of barter: ~i>\ to 8d is the quoted value. Cheese is also dull at 3d to 5 Ad. In hain3 and bacon the business has been quiet. STOCK AN"F> STATIONS. The continued dry weather, accompanied as it is with heavy nor'-wvst weather, is seriously affecting stock of all descriptions. As a rule, the country surrounding Christchurjih has seldom or never been aodestitute of anything like good pasture for years past as it ia at present. Consequently, fat stock is being rushed forward into the market, and there is every prospect of there being a scarcity of fat beef and mutton during the winter montlis, as not only is grass short, but the turnip crops are at a standstill for want of nioistnre. At Addington. <n Wednesday, 7724 sheep. 276 /head of cattle. and 185 pigs were yarded. Sheep. —Some good lines of splendid quality".sheep were offeied, and only in consequence of the dry state of the country were thev parted with. The demand was exceedingly dull, and many lots passed off for boiling purposes, otherwise they could not have been quitted. Prices remain about at last week's quotations, viz., Id to ljd for mutton. Beef.—A fair supply was yarded of good, fair, useful, beef, which moved off at from 24s to 26*s per IflOlbs ; one or two lots, of choice qualitr, a shade over. _ Pig'.—A very «ood lot of well-bred pigs yarded, and in healthy condition, cleared at .only medium prices. Store Sheep very dull of sale, but little demand, and quitted at a further reduction in prices. Store Cattle without inquiry, no buyers in the market, except at low prices ; in fact, the continued drought has caused complete ■tagnation in store stock of sll descriptions.
