A DREADFUL HURRICANE.

Auckland, March 22.

The Blanche brines news from Raratonga of a dreadful .accident at Paumoto. Five hundred lives were lost, and many vessels wrecked.

A correspondent writing from Raratonga on March ;">th says one of the Society's vs.-sols which has arrived from Tahiti reports that one of the Paumato Lagoon Islands named Anan lias been completely swi'pt away by a hurricane or tidal wave. The houses, trees, stores, and inhabitants are all gone. Mr. Bosie. the trading agent for Messrs. Branders. Tahiti, escaped with a few others. The greater portion of the group was devastated, and between 400 and 500 lives were lost, besi.les several vessels. An eye-witness at Paupeke writes that the water rose overland, sweeping away everything. We retreated to the highest point, about 20ft. above the sea level. Fortunately the cyclone abated, when the water was within 2ft. of us. The Tahiti Government sent c man-of-war. The Island of Kankira suffered the most, losing 117 people and all the houses and boats. Messrs. Branderlost three schooners, one cutter, and twelve small boats, besides the whole establishment at Anan. The cycloue continued from the 7th to the Bth February.
