NORTH OTAGO HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY'S SHOW.

The Autumn Show of this Society was opened to-day, at the Volunteer Hall, under anything but favorable auspices ; but notwithstanding the very poor season, and tin* ivivJeh'-d we;tti>er to-day, there was a very <_'"od disi.ilny of ilowers, fruit, and vegetables, and the show was very well attended. Wc have not spuee tit our disposal to criticise ihe various exhibits at length, but there are a few things that wo feel compelled to notice specially. In the first place, we must say that the success of the show was greatly attributable to the energy of the Hon. Alathow Holmes ami Mr. Connell (President of the Society), both of whom sent in a large number of articles for exhibition only, and by this means enabled the Society to make a display which could not otherwise have been put forward. Messrs. W. Fenwi-k and W. H. Tesehemaker also greatly contributed to the success of the show, in sending in a lanje quantity of fruit and vegetables of first-class quality for exhibition only. Several other gentlemen also did go "1 work, and if many others who are in a position to a-si-t the Society by seridiiiir exhibits to the shows were to do so wc ni'ghr look for a still greater amount of success in the exhibitions o ( the Society in the fu'ure. The Hon. M. Holmes exhibited a splendid lot of fuchsias, geraniums, gladiolii, fruit. <ve. Mr. Council's display of Miliums were really grand, and the same gentleman also .-bowed a number of other excellent a tic ••* The display of fruit and vegetables was first-class. Amongst the latter a co lection of potatoes shown by Me--rs. Sti'iuson and Leigh attracted particular attention, brim,' of the finest samples obtainable in Great Britain. Mr. s-pratt showed some very nice seedling petunias.

At the Mejhanics' Insti'ute there was a nice show of bouquets made by children in the presence of .Mr. Kidd. These were jndcf. d bv a committee of ladies, consisting of Mrs. Steward, Mr-. Council and Mrs.' Clowes. In all there were nine competitors, and the ladies hid some difficulty in deciding up in tie merits of the different exhibits, the whole of the bouquets being so very nicely made up. It was decided to ask that a prize mitthc be awarded to each of the children, in consideration of the excellent manner in which they had done their work, and for the way in which thev came forward on so wet a day. The committee placed the various competitor's in the following or er: — Ist—Louisa Mnoivrof" : ilvA Mary Simpson: :W- :' ? ms Forsyth: 4th—Jim Hood: oth—Catherine Pcet. .Mary Peirce and Jessie Cor mack (-qrral); .Mary MWlertrie anil Catherine Pearce (equal).
