DISTRICT PRIZE FIRING.

The Artillery Corps completed their firing for the district prizes yesterday afternoon. The ranges were—2oo, 300. and 400 yards ; 5 rounds ; Wimbledon targets. The following are the scores :

The prize-takers are as fo'lows: — Gunner Fillenl, Ist prize, L2 ; Corporal Roulston, 2nd, LI 10s ; Captain VTorton, 3rd, Ll j Sergeant-Major Holdsworth, 4th, 10s.

Louis Spiers was placed in the dock charged with having yesterday stolen a gold ring of the value of L 3 10s., the property of Allan M'Corkindale.

Mr. Inspector Smith prosecuted. The prisoner pleaded not guilty.

From the evidence of Mr. M'Corkind.alc it. appeared that the accused went into his shop and asked to see some rings with the object of buying one. After some debuting as to price, accused agreed to purchase a ring for L2 fis., and while Mr. M'Corkindale was putting the money away, the accused picked up a more valuable ring and walked of}', leaving the one he had bought behind. When Mr. M'Corkindale was putting the remaining rings away, lie noticed the swindle, and went after the perpetrator. On overtaking the accused Mr. M'Corkindale asked to have the ring restored, but accused said the ring ho had taken was the one lie had bought, and refused to give it back and take the proper ring or his money. Ho was then given into custody.

The !Bcnch sentenced the prisoner to seven days' imprisonment, with hard labour.
