VrELLINGTON. March d. Competitive plans for a new St. Peters church, in Willis-street, have been received from Auckland, Napier, Chrlstchurch, and Dunedin. The selected one was by G. Rosholz, architect, of Wellington. Dr. Soinerville has closed his mission in Wellington, and will proceed at once ro Wanganui, to hold a series of services there. The Northern Land, Loan, and Building Co., have sohi Their frontage on Lambtun Quay, at LUG per foot.
March G. The captain of the steamer Taupo reports to the police that Mr. Alexander Reid. a well-known journalist, came on board the steamer at Lvtteiton, paying his passage for Auckland on board. He was last seen about half-past 10 last night, when oil Kaikoura, but was shortly afterwards missed. The ship was searched for him, but be could not be found. Tho first through train between Foxtou and Wanganui was run this morning.
Tito Government has arranged with Sir John Coode to come to New Zealand at once and visit all the harbours in the Colony and report upon them. The invitation was S'-nt by telegram, and he replied, accepting.
It w;is arranged that the Hon. Mr. Larnach would resign his portfolio and seat before leaving Auckland by the mail steamer. It is assumed that his resignation of his portfolio had been posted, and his resignation of his seat in the House placed in the hands of a friend, who will exercis.! his discretion as to when it shall be sent in to the Speaker. It is understood that Mr. C. S. Reeves, late Mayor of Dunedin, will contest Mr. Larnach's seat in the Ministerial interest.
CHRISTOHURCIT. March 5. The police are talcing proceedings against tiie grooei'.s for selling locally made wines, which have hitherto been looked upon as Good Templar drinks, but which analysis has proved contain 15 per cent, of alcohol. Af. auction sales to-day, the freehold of thi.'. Borough Hotel, High-street, the lease of which expires in December. IS7S, sold for LGuOO : and the freehold of Carl's Empire Hotel. High-street. 30ft. by 105 ft., under a lease. LI per foot, ejpiring in •June, 1882, sold for LSIOO. The occupier of the hotel was the purchaser in each case. 1 March 6. At four o'clock this morning a large boarding-house, adjoining Mr. Maples' Southern Hotel was destroyed by fire. The insurance is not yet known. Several buildings in the vicinity had narrow escapes. «, AKAROA. March 5. The Count}'- Council to-day resolved to adopt the Act in its entirety.
AUCKLAND. March 5. Sailed—Zealandia, for San Francisco ; New Zealand passengers—Messrs. Case}', Allan, Campbell, (and 4 children), Yarborough, Mrs. Hopkins, Rev. Mr. Walsh, Col. and Mrs. Ramsay, Mr. and Mrs. Comiskey, Hon. Mr. and Mrs. Larnach, Messrs. Browning, Elleker, Hall, Paterson, Ohlson, Thomas, M'Quin, Snelling, Hogg, Nancarrow, Brown, Murdoch, Monastery, and Cruse. The Rotorua has sailed for Sydney ; Stair, from Newcastle. Sailed—Appelles, ship, for Newcastle. ALEXANDRA. March 5. A large meeting of natives will be held at Kniti on the Till. Natives from the !'2ast and West Coast will attend, and the King will be present. It is said that the next meeting with Sir George Grey will be the largest meeting ever held, as Sir Guorge Grey's influence is to bo brought to bear upon having representatives of every tribe in the island present. DUNEDIN. March 5. At 2 o'clock on the afternoon of the 3rd insc, a girl named 'Sella Bell, while gathering firewood near the railway station at Bltieskin. found a box with a label on the lid, on which was written in large letters the following words:—"lf you 151 id my motherless darling, I pray you, for .Testis' sake, to bury it in the true Catholic way." The girl immediately reported the matter to a constable stationed in the. district, and on going to tlte place lie found a soap box as described. It was tied systematically with small twine, and on opening it. the constable found the body of a male child, apparently S or 10 years old, in a perfect state. There wore no marks of violence on the body, and the child was dressed in a neat and respectable manner. It is supposed that the box was k ft there by a passenger by the evening train on Monday. An inquest will be hold on Thursday.
The country districts are preparing for the reception of Sir George Grey, bir nothing is being done in the city.
