WELLINGTON. March 1. Diphtheria has made its appearance in Wanganui. Preliminary steps have been taken to establish a new Iteform Club. The last, attempt to establish a second Club failed. It is reported hero that Mr. Harper intends resigning his seat for the Cheviot, and that Mr. Ward, late member for YVairau, will be brought forward as Government candidate, and probably Mr. Studholmc against him as a supporter of the Atkinson Party. At a meeting' of the Ncv Zeabcnrf Tunes Company, a motion to wind up the Company was lost by a largo majority. March .'!. The wheat market is very unsettled. Owing to the competition between local millers and buyers for the Auckland market, prices have been forced tip from 4s od to 4s 0d to farmers, or equal to 5s f.o.b. Flour, however, has nut responded, some millers offering to ship at Ll2 f.0.1)., at which rate large parcels have changed hands, with other contracts pending. Oats are nominally 3s 3d to 3s (id. A train of waggons were being " breaked" down the incline to the gravel pits, when they escaped Loni the control of the breakman and "took charge," the result being that the waggons were more or less injured. 100 lbs. of dynamite were used in one charge in snagging the Thames River, at Te Aroiia, deepening it 4 ft. A fire occurred at Stoke last night which resulted in the total destruction of three stacks of wheat and barley—in all 800 bushels—belonging to one Allport, a farmer. It is supposed to have originated in the stack heating. A strong wind was blowing at the time. The stacks are uninsured. * TIMAB.U. March J. This afternoon a full meeting of the Chamber of Commerce was held to consider the report of the Committee re the railway tariff betweeu here and Lyttelton.
The report was unanimously adopted, and it was resolved to request the Dunedin and Oamaru Chambers of Commerce and Harbour Boards to co-operate with Timaru in asking the Government to have the tariff placed on an equitable footing at once. ♦ NEW PLYMOUTH.
