A blast went off accidentally, through an imperfect or too short fuse being used, and three men who had•ifefefen working at the charge had not- time to get away before the blast went off.- One
man managed to get off pretty well, being not seriously hurt; the other two were knocked down and nearly buried by the stone thrown out. Besides bruises and contusions, they are very much burned about the faces and necks ■; and doubts are entertained as to whether they will recover.
The Customs revenue collected at Wellington for the month ending to-day amounted to L 15.145. For the corresponding month of the previous year it was LI6,GG7. During February, 75 births and 24 deaths were registered in Wellington, and 33 marriage certificates were issued. The railway traffic returns for the four weeks ending 12th January last, for the Dunedin section, are published. The total revenue is L 9860. For the corresponding four weeks of last year it was L 7233. The total revenue for the financial year is—Dunedin section, L 45,900 ; expenditure, L 38.075. Total revenue for In vercargill, L 21.793 : expenditure, L1C,885. AUCKLAND. February 28. The Star to-night, on the authority of Captain Maling, A.D.C., contradicts a statement in a leading article in to-day's Herald, to the effect that the Governor has received a telegram from the Home Government, stating that it fully approved of his refusal to grant a dissolution of Parliament to Sir George Grey. The Star says the Governor has not received any telegram on the subject. The opening of the extension railwayto Ohaupo has been delayed for ten days. Michael Costello, charged with a second attempt to commit suicide, was discharged. The evidence showed that ho was of unsound mind, through intemperance, when he attempted to cut his throat. A man named John Young has been apprehended, charged with receiving stolen property, consisting of 13 cwt. sugar, forming part of the estate of David Hamilton, recently arrested charged with fraudulent bankruptcy. Young was remanded 011 bail.

A correspondent at Te Awamutu writes contradicting the statement that Rowi intends to visit Wellington next session. The cutter Telegraph is ashore at Kaipara Heads. The cargo will probably be saved. Both vessel and cargo are uninsured. The Thames Gas Company have declared a dividend of 3 per cent, for the half year. HOKITIKA. February 28. Sir George Grey, Messrs. Fisher, Wilson. Macandrew. Gisborne, Brown, and Mitchell, and the rest of the Ministerial party, left by the Hinemoa to-day for Martin's Bay and the Bluff. The public meeting last evening at the theatre, to hear Sir George Grey's address, was crowded and most enthusiastic. Sir George Grey made a favourable impression amongst the public, and 011 leaving the wharf was loudly cheered by a large crowd. Sailed—Alhambra, for Melbourne. CHRISTCHURCH. February 28. Mr. Clark, civil engineer, has arrived in town to report upon the city drainage scheme. IN ELS ON. February 28. The ship Gainsborough, with immigrants, 114 days from London, is signalled. She was spoken in the bay by a steamer, and reports all well. She lost her bowsprit, and jibboom in a gale.
