SMOKING ON RAILWAY PLATFORMS.
TO THE EDITOR OF TUB KVENINU MAIL. Slit,—Whilst quietly enjoying my afterbreakfast pipe, on the platform at the Oamaru Railway Station, seeing somo friends away by the '.t.-15 train 1 was, I must admit most courteously, informed by the station master that 1 was infringing the rules by smoking on the platform, and thereby exposing myself to a penalty of LIU sfg. 1 immediately complied with his request and put my pipe in my poeliot. Such a law being in existence in a place like Oamaru, which only boasts of a station with an open platform without as much as a verandah to atford shelter for parties who may be, and very frequently are, compelled to wait exposed to Ilia weather, must appear to any man possessed of an atom of common sense an absurdity, and requires looking into. The majority of the male sex who make use of the railway, we may safely assert, are addicted to smoking ; and it seems an exceedingly arbitrary law to be in existence. As such, however, seems to be the case, there ought at. any rate to lie a public notice to that died, placarded in. some conspicuous place.-—I am, eve., J. 0. It. ClMllllll.
