DUNEDIN RACES. The acceptances for the various events to be run at the Dunedin meeting, which commences on Thursday week, cannot be considered, highly satisfactory taken as a whole. Some of the raoes are likely to prove very hollow affairs indeod, as may be judged from the fact that barely sufficient horses are left in them to make races. The following are the numbers of acceptors in the different events :—Maiden Plate, 2 ; Dunedin Cup, 14 ; Newmarket Stakes, 2 ; Publicans' Handicap, 4 ; Champagne Stakes, 4 ; Selling Race, 0 ; Hurdle Race, 10 ; Jockev Club Handicap, 7 ; Derby, 4; Railway Plate, 10 ; Steeplechase, 9 ; Queen's Plate, 4. " Nimrod," the sporting contributor in the Saturday Advertiser, gives the followin in reference to the betting on the Dunedin Cup : —The betting market was convulsed on Monday last, when Orange Lightning's name was quietly introduced, and he was backed to a considerable extent at IQO to 2 and 8. Presently, however, telegrams to back him for a lot of money came from the North, and the bookmakers jumped his price up to 100 to 10, at which ho is now quoted. In Wellington on Saturday a commission for the Redwood stable had been executed to win LIO,OOO straight out and in doubles. It appears that before the Wellington Cup, Lara and Orange Lightning had a trial, in which the latter beat the former easily ; and Lara's win in the Wellington Cup therefore makes the colt look well for Dunedin. There is not much alteration ] in the other quotations, save that Punga- j
werewere is being knocked about like a shuttlecock. The following is the list : 3 to 1 agst. Hippocampus 7 1 Longlands 9 1 Templeton 9 1 Titania 10 1 Ariel 10 1 Orange Lightning 100 (5 Cloth of Gold 100 100 100 ;5 to 1 agst. any other.
