The Stewards of the Wellington Jockey Club paid away the following sums when settling up with the winners : —Mr. Bolton, owner of Lara, L 427 10s ; Mr. R. Ray, L 261 5s ; Mr. G. Fraser, L2OO ; Mr. D. Champion, L 99 15s ; Mr. Haywood, L 95 ; Mr. Gilligan. L6l los ; Mr. Heaton, L 47 10s; Mr. Redwood, L 47 10s. All the other sums paid were under L2O. It is expected that a branch railway to the r.icecourse will be completed before the next race meeting.
OHRISTCHURCH. February 13. At the inquest on the body of Thomasson, who was killed in the recent fatal affray, the jury returned a verdict of manslaughter against John Levett, who was committed for trial. At the final meeting of the Indian Famine Relief Fund it was stated that the total amount collected was LSS4O. The balance (L 2701 in hand will be giyen to the Benevolent Institution. There is very great dissatisfaction among the merchants and others at the short supply of trucks between Christ church and the port. NEW PLYMOUTH. February 12. Mr. Decimus Atkinson has written a letter to the Snb-Inspector of Police statr ing that, hearing his name appears in the police report, he requests "that the cause may be shown, and that he may be pro* ceeded against forthwith." He has also written a letter to the paper denying that he had anything to do with the party who attempted the /destruction of the arch raised in connection wish §ir G. Grey's visit. I
WANGANUI February 13. The Champion Four-oared Outrigger Race was won by the Lyttelton boat. The Dolly Varden was three lengths, and the Christchurch boat ten lengths behind. It was a splendid race. AUCKLAND. February 12; A meeting of solicitors resolved on the formation of a law society. The Cricketers Committee entertained the Australians on a fishing excursion today, chartering a steamer for the purpose. BLENHEIM. February 12. Yesterday, three Greek fiishermen from Wellington got on the Wairau bar. Their boat capsized and sank. One of them swam ashore, and the two others kept afloat with the help of oars. A man named O'Brien, living near the Pilot Station, saw the boat disappeai*, and hastened to their assistance. He saved one, who recovered, and, after an hours' exertion, the other managed to get ashore. The Napier came down and touched the same spit, but soon got off, only to go ashore again on the opposite side, and is now stuck there waiting for the tide. HOKITIKA. February 12. David Cruickshank pleaded guilty, in the Resident Magistrate's Court to-day, to having an illicit still in his possession. He was fined LIOO, or six months' imprisonment. Several .miles of beach are strewed with small fish near Okarito. The cause is unknown. Hundreds of tons of fish have been thrown ashore. NAPIER. February 12. The funeral of the late Bishop of Waiapu took place to-day. The attendance was very large. The shops in town were all closed. < TATJRANGA. February 12. To-day the telephone was tried successfully by Mr. Lloyd, the electrician, through a resistance equal to 700 miles of perfectly insulated wire. The sound reached the receiving instrument as distinctly, though a little fainter, as when it only travelled through a few yards of wire.
