The Evening Mail. TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 1878.
The Kingarooma, with the inward »uez mail on board, arrived at Port Chalmers at » qnarter before six o'clock this morning; but owing to some reason the Oamaru portion of the mail was not forwarded by the s.s. Waitaki, -which left for this port nearly three hours after the arrival of the Rtngarooma. The consequence is that residents of this district will have to wait another day for their letters, nates the mad was forced by the St. KiWa, wbich also left Port Chalmers this morning, but ot tins tber» is very little hope.
1 The following is the classification ofthf immigrants forwarded to to-day per V\ai Itaki-—6 ri-vl-ultural labourers; 2 marnec i»ao!es- "7 domestic servants ; and 2o supfSmml farrn servants. The greater portion sS|Pfflingle men are already engaged. ,'"> Mr. Carrington, one of Mr. Henderson's k&aff of engineers in r-nnention with the 'Wer-.v or ks, who w- just v covering rnn> -i r-ap accident by wh cli :: - i'"t r.r.d j been severely injured, met with a.iothci ! accident to-day. Shortly before eleven tins | morning, Mr. Carringtoa and Mr. Wood were driving in a buggy past tne Tosl Office when the bolt connecting the shatt with 'the vehicle, broke. Mr. Carrington at once pulled up, and m doinc .so the trap came into contact witli the horse, causing him to bolt, the staft becoming entangled amongst the terrified animal's leg*. .Seeing the danger ol their position, Mr. Wood and Mr. Carr.ngtou e'Siyed to jump clear of the vehicle ; the former succeeded, but the latter, by reasot of his already lamed condition, received c ' severe shaking, and seriously injured the fool that was recovering from the former accident. Mr Carrington was carried to the Empire Hotel, pending the arrival of a cab to convej him home, where he was attended to by Dr. De Lautonr. The horse and trap were re covered at the corner of Heed and Gocmei streets by Mr. U. Blair, very little damage ■ oeing done to either. It will be observed from a perusal of oui report of the proceedings of the Oamari Schools Committee's meeting, held last night that Mr. Fidler has received the appoint' ment (subject to the ratification of th< Education Board) of second master to tin Oamaru Grammar School. Some tune agr Mr. Fidler applied for, and received, the mastership of the Waiareka School, and n fairness to that gentleman it is our duty t( explain that he was released from all obhga tion in regard thereto previous to applyins for the position which he has just receivee at the hands of the Oamaru School Com mittee. The Waiareka School Committee were willing to suii'er a little inconvenience rather than stand in the way of Mr. Fuller's promotion to a higher position it the school in which he had labored with sucl good results. The usual weekly meeting of the St. Paul': Young Men's Association was held last even ing in their rooms behind the church. Then was a fair number of members present, bu the attendance was not so large as it shouh have been, seeing that the Association num bers over 70 members. The ordinary routine business having been transacted, Mr. Ferrie cave his promised essay entitled " A Cursor: Ulance at Light and Photography." Mr Ferrier displayed a considerable amount o knowledge on the subjeet, and entered upoi it in- a comprehensive manner, affording ; i-ery great amount of pleasure to his hearers. A. hearty vote of thanks was accorded to hin ior Ids very interesting essay. A meeting of the Oamaru Schools Com mittee took place last night at Mr. Hardy': iffice. Present—Messrs. W. J. Steward (n the chair), X. Fleming, Gibbs, Falconer, J Bee, Headland, and Hardy (Secretary). Thi ninntes of the previous meeting having beei :onfirmed. and the outward and inward cor •espondence read, it was resolved, '• Tha Messrs. "W*. J. Steward and De Lautom Naseby) be nominated on the Educatioi Soard." The consideration of application! or the positions of Picctor and second ane hird masters of the Grammar School was hen proceeded with. The numbers of ap ilications and recommendations were as fed OV y- :—For the Eectorship, 11—Mr. I'eattie ecommended : for the second mastership, S -Mr. Fuller recommended : for the . third nastership, !> —Mr. Hewat recommended. The names of the chosen candidates will be brwarded to the Education Board, Dunedm, or its ratification. A vote of thanks to the rliair »,'.-«.>il the proceedings. We would reinind tUos/> "w" l "** " f **"* Wth Otag.j ICHIe Association who are de■irous of taking iim-fc in tj» F»l>i-uaiy-com-.etition, which will take place on Saturday .est. that they must make their entries vith' the Secretary not later than S o'clock his evening.
A. «eneral meeting of members of the Oamara Mutual Benefit Building Society, for the purpose of authorising the incorporation of the Society under "The Building Societies Act, IS7OV will be held m the Mechanics' Institute, at 8 oolock. this evening. The Beaumont Combination Troupe gave their second and last performance at the Masonic Hall last evening, when there was a good attendance, and the several performers acquitted themselves very creditably. The first part of the programme was nearly tho same as that presented on .Saturday evening, the onlv alteration being the substitution of "Come where my love lies dreaming" (fey Madame Beaumont) for "Whip"poor-"Will." Madame Beaumont seemed in better voice last night than on Saturday, and her rendering of "The Merry Vivaudiere " and "My Gay Cockade " were loudlv and deservedly applauded. Miss Tatti'Eosa also received' a well-merited share of applause for her songs and dances. The drumming of Mr. Gibbons, in his "military music,'' was really excellent, as also were Mr Davenport's solos on the mouth liarnioiiicon. The farce of "The Browns" brought the entertainment to a close. Professor Weber (piano) and Mr. H. Poore (flute and piccolo) rendered the accompaniments in a masterly style. We understand the | Troupe appear at Waimate this evening.
