INSUFFICIENCY OF RAILWAY TRUCKS.
His Worship the Mayor received the following letter last evening reconstructed Railways Office, Wellington, 7th January, 1878. Sir,—l have the honor, by direction of the Hon. the Minister for Public Works, to acknowledge receipt of your telegram of the sth inst., relative to the serious delay in the shipping business of the Port of Oamaru, owing to the insufficiency of trucks on the railway, and also as to complaints with regard to the railway management. A copy of your telegram has been forwarded to Mr. Conyers, who- has the general supervision and entire control of focal arrangements on the lines in the Oamaru district, and his attention drawn to the various subjects contained therein, with directions to endeavour to remedy as far as possible any faults in the manage-
ment. With regard to the insufficiency of trucks, I am directed to state that the Government are using every endeavour to meet the requirements in this respect. More trucks have already been put on the line ; a considerable number are in course of erection, and will shortly be in use ; while a further supply of iron work for waggons is on its way to the Colony from England—in fact, now due ; and it is confidently expected that within six months from this date over 400 more waggons will be available for the largelyincreasing traffic.— l have, iXso., N. W. Wesry.
