The Council has unanimously agreed to petition the Queen, and to ask that instruction be given to provide constitutional Government. No further dismissals have taken place, but the Executive lias sanctioned numerous alterations in the Civil Service. It is uncertain whether Mr. O'Longhlan will contest Melbourne with Mr. Francis. Serjeant Sleigh and two other eminent barristers state that the action of the Government in dismissing the County Court Judges, the Police Magistrates, and the Coroners, is illegal. Much importance is attached to their opinion.
