A special train, consisting of an engine and one carriage, came through from Cliristchuich to Oamaru relay in six hours, having started from the former place at 8.30, and arrived at tha Oamaru station at 2 p.m. The object of the train was to carry Messrs. Couyers, General Manager of Railways, and Carruthers, Engineei-in-Chief, to Palmerston, where they are to meet the Honorable Mr. Larnach, to discuss railway matters. We hope that the speedy opening of the Moeraki-Palmerston section of the southern line will be the consequence of the visit of these two officials to Palmerston, and their conference with Mr. Larnach.

We learn that Miss Ada Ward, in eonjunction with the Lydia Howarde Troupe, will give a series of entertainments in the Masonic Hall next week, commencing on Monday evening. Miss Ward is stated by competent critics to be the finest actress that has visited the Colonies for many years, and is also an excellent reader. We have not the least doubt that the entertainments to be given by her in connection with the Misses Howarde and Navaro (admittedly first-class artistes) and others, will be largely attended.
There has been very considerable trouble amongst the railway employes at Christchurch, in consequence of the revolutions which have of late occurred in the department. It appears that, smarting under a sense of unfairness, the employes held a meeting to whicli they invited certain members of the House of in order to ventilate their wrongs. The authorities disapproved of their action, and the result is that Mr. J. E. FitzGerald, the Comptroller-
General, and Mr. J. Carruthers, the Engineer-in-Chief, have visited Christchurch in reference to the agitation at present going on among certain of the railway employes. It is quite probable that a full inquiry will be held, and the whole matter sifted to the bottom.
