THE AUSTRALIAN ELEVEN AT CHRISTCHURCH.

[BY TELKORAriI.] Chri.stohuuch, January 19.

Great was the juHlee amongst the supporters of the Canterbury men at the Australians being got rid of for the small score of 4G. It was a surprise for every one, but in a sjreat measure the Australians had only themselves to blame, though a good deal of bad luck attended them. They evidently did not expect to find the bowling and fielding so good, and in attempting to take liberties with ihe bowlers and the field, lost several wickets. The fielding of the Canterbury men. with one or two exceptions where catches were missed, was really good. Leach made a brilliant catch with his left hand, the finest ever seen on the ground. The bowling, particularly that of the brothers Frith, was excellent. After the Australians were put out, a new wicket was prepared, and the Canterbury men oommenced their innings. Spofforth and Garrett were the bowlers. At first the prospects of the local team did not look bright, the first wicket falling for four runs ; but Ollivier soon commenced operations in real earnest, and by good sterling cricket placed runs to the civdii of the Canterbury team very rapidly. Corfe, .Ashby, and Leach, three of the best bats in Canterbury, disappointed the spectators, neither of then] doing much in the way of scoring ; but Moore, Neilson, and Baker, witli Ollivier made things lively for the field, changes of bowlers being rendered necessary. When the time came for drawing the stumps, the Canteremy score stood at 105 for the loss of ten wickets.
