MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the Municipal Council was held last evening at the Council Chambers. There were present —His Worship the Mayor, Councillors Mainland, Spence, and Familton. MINUTES, ETC. The minutes of the last meeting were read confirmed, and the outward correspondence was read and approved. bee's corner. A letter from Mr. E. Sessions, acting Secretary to the Ministers in Dunedin, in reply to a communication from the Council applying for the amount voted for widening the street at Bee'a corner, wjw read. that the letter had been forwarded to and would no doubt be dealt with as early as possible. WATERWORKS -RACE. Messrs. Smith, Anderson, and Co. wrote in reference to some matters in connection with the waterworks race. CORPORATIONS ACT. The Colonial Secretary wrote, intimating that Part XL of the Municipal Corporations Act, 1876, would be brought into operation as requested. ROAD TO THE QUARRY". . The Clerk of the Waitaki Road Board wrote, intimating that the Chairman (Mr. Duncan) and Messrs. Connell and Evans had been appointed a Committee to negotiate with the several proprietors in reference to the proposed road to Section 29, Block IV., Oamaru District. TRANSFER OF LEASE. Permission was given to Messrs. Lindsay and Geinmell to trausfer-the lease of Section 4, Block X.CV., to Mr. James Johnston, qu the, condition that all arrears of rent were paid. DRAIN PIPES. A letter was read from Messrs. Austin ank Kirk, Christcluvrcb, enclosing a price list of their salt-glazed drain pipe?. VALUATION. The Council's Valuator (Mr. J, C. Clarke), forwarded the complete valuation rod uf the town, showing a total of L 42 7/03, being an increase of L' 2,200 on list year's valuation. The list was ordered to be open for inspection at the Council Cnambers until the loth February, the necessary notice to be given by advertisement, PUBLIC WORKS OOltinvTEE. The report from this Committee dealing with various matters was read. Tne principal item was that plans had been ordered to be prepared for the laying out of the Savern-street garden, and a recommendation that some ground be ploughed up for a belt of trees on the Cape. It was resolved that the report be approved, and the recommendations therein contained carried out, and that a plan be also ordered to be prepared for the laying out of the Esplanade north of Coquetstreet. ACCOUNTS. Accounts to the amount of LS3S 6s 6d, as certified to by the Finance Committee, were passed for payment. The Finance Committee having reported that the amount of claims for supervision of works and extra engineering assistance appeared to be excessive, the Public Works Committee were instructed to inquire into the matter with a view to some reduction being effected. RIBBLE-STREET. On the motion of Councillor Familton the footpaths in Ribble-street, on the east side of Thames-street, were ordered to be shingled for a wid,th of four feet. The Council then rose,
