THE AUSTRALIAN ELEVEN IN DUNEDIN.

[BY TELEGRAPH, FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.]

Dunedin, January 12. The Australians won the toss, and took the field. There was a good wicket. The weather was threatening but likely to hold out fine. Spring (the Dunedin captain) and Austin appeared to face the bowling of Kendall and Spofforth. Austin opened by bitting Kendall to square leg for 2. Spring followed with a similar number off Spofforth. Three byes were next obtained, after which Austen drove Kendall for 2, and then got 3 by a nice leg bit. Kendall, in his next over, disnnssed Austin. 1—7 —14. M'Neil joined his captain, and played with great care, but the latter soon placed one into C. Bannerman's hands, which was held, and the batsman retired. 2—7—32. Up to the luncheon adjournment, none of the Dunedin men except M'Neil had made a stand.
