The statements of oar local contemporary in reply to our charge of copying our cablegrams without acknowledgment, are inaccurate and misleading : but, as the matter is now in the hands of arbitrators for decision, we refrain from any further comment at present. On (lit that Mr. Shrimski intends to place himself at the d sposal of the ratepayers of Kakamii to fill the position in the Waitaki County Council left vacant by the death of Mr. Wheatley. Through the courtesy of Mr. Sumpter we are enabled to inform our readers that the Australian Eleven will play hen; on their way to Christehurch next Thursday, having accepted L3O as a consideration for doing so. The Oamaru Artillery "Volunteers will muster for battalion parade at half past 7 this evening. Mr. Menlove lias purchased to-day, from Mr. Hawdon, a property at Teaneraki, consisting of 2133 acres, for the sum of L2S,OUO. What is likely to tnrn out a very good cricket contest will take place next Saturday between North Oamaru v. South Oamaru. The following are the names of the i layers on both sides : —North Oamaru—Booth, Butt, Corbett, Du Tie, Edwards, Ferens, Honour, Lowe, De Lautour, Rice, Walls, and Balmcr. South Oamaru—Atherton, Church, F. F'enwick, G. Fcnwick, Hiekey, M 'Donald, Pickett, Reid, Rhodes, Sumpter, and Tempest. The following is a copy of a circular received by his Worship the Mayor of Oamaru. In response to this appeal the Mayor notifies by advertisement his willingness to receive and forward to Dnnedin subscriptions towards the object which the Jewish Relief Committee have in view:—" London, November Ist, 1577 :—The calamities which have befallen the non-combatant portion of the people at the seat of war in Turkey have become notorious throughout the civilised world. The cowardly assailants of defencej less persons have in their ravages spared j neither sex nor age. Thousands upon thou- ! sands, both of our community and those who follow other creeds, have been rendered [totally destitute, and are now left un-ro- ■ vided with any shelter, food, or clothing, | whilst the rigor 3 of winter have set iu at an j earlier period, and are thus aggravating the I terrors of the existing misery. We there- : fore venture to solicit your kind sympathy ' and prompt contributions in aid of the work | undertaken by our committee. Mr. Layard,i Her Majesty's Ambassador at Constanti- [ nople, has humanely ii::durt:ikcn the super- ! vision of this charitable work, which is I managed with extreme cave and discretion by men of position, without di-tiiiction of i creed. Our committee will most gratefully acknowledge your co-opeiv.tion in the grant of reiier", in which the philanthropy or our race is represented in its true character of blissful usefulness.—We have, etc., (signed) Lewis Emamrel, A. Lowy, Hon. .Sees."— Those who have read of the terrible experiences of the Jews in the country now suffering from the scourge of war, will need little or no solicitation to ensure their h?arty co-operation. The following is a list of subscriptions received from Oamaru by the Otago branch of the Anglo-Jewish Association towards the above-mentioned object : S. Shrimski, Es>(., M.H.K.. The monthly meeting of the North Otagn Rifle Association was held last night at the Royal Hotel. The President (Dr. DcLautour) ocenpied the chair. Members present —Messrs. M'Corkindale, Headland, Roulston, E. Harding, and Atkinson (Secretary). After the disposal of some routine business, it was proposed by Mr. M'Corkindale, j " That, having received the consent of the I Otepopo members, the date of firing from the first Saturday in the month to the third, , and that the January competition take place ■on Saturday, the 19th instant. Ranges—- ! 200, 400, and G't'O yards ; any position ; j Wimbledon targets ; carbines to bo allowed one point at 401), and three points at 600 yards." Proposed by Mr. Atkinson and seconded by Mr. M'Corkindale, "That arrangements be made to set apart, a whole day for the purpose of firing for prizes in connection with the Association, and that the Secretary be instructed to make the necessary arrangements for the same." It was also suggested that the ladies should be invited to give the matter then - countenance and to iustitute a ladies' prize to be competed for. A vote of thanks to the chair terminated the proceedings.
