TtsS annual meeting of the members of Hie North OfcagoTurf Club will take place this evening at the Empire Hotel, at 8 o'oloek. It is urgent that there should be a full attendance on this occasion, in order that the Club may be maintained <sii a satisfactory footing, and worked •vigorously during the ensuing year. The past success of the Club is a matter for self-gratiilaticn tq those who have had its management placed in their hands, and to whom this success is mainly due ; but the prosperity of the past should only whet the appetite for more of it. The Oamaru race meetings have hitherto ranked high in every respect. Last year there was plenty of competition, and that of the highest class ; the stakes run for were only beaten in amount by throe other Clubs in the Colony, and the attendance was exceedingly numerous for that of a Colonial race meeting. It is not for amusement only that such institutions should be fostered ; there are other and more important considerations involved. This district is essentially agricultural and pastoral in its character, and the breeding of good horse stock should be our dearest object. It is an admitted fact that the spirit of emulation engendered by race meetings amongst brooders has had the effect of improving iho ehanvtur of horse stock io an amazing extont. V.'o trust that the North Otago Turf Club will in the fiiture, not only be conducted witli the energy that has characterised the ChuYs past history, but that it will experience that natural progression which should be expected in the case of evervthing in a district like that of Oamaru.
