(per press agency.) + WELLINGTON. January 2. The Royal Italian Opera Company opened here last night, under the patronage of the Governor, in the opera of Travatore. There was a crowded house, and the performance was greeted with great applause. To-day was a close holiday, and there was a large attendance at the Caledonian sports. Colonel Gorton resigns the appointment of Inspector of Stores from toTday. Sailed—Zealandia, for London, with a cargo consisting of 5200 bales wool, 67 bales skins, IL7 packages tallow, 108 packages meat, and 57 packages sundries. Total value, L103,G25. January 3. The Acclimatisation Society has liberated 2000 young salmon in the rivers of this Provincial District, and the fish are apparently in a thriving condition. These are from the first lot of Californian ova sent to Christciuirch. A further lot will also be liberated.

The following shipping intelligence lias been recived from Lloyd's Melbourne Agency : Arrived Allumbagh, from Melbourne. The Cutty Sark, for Sydney, which put into port after a collision ; the Chile, for Auckland, which came into collision with the Osprey, and put back for repairs ; and the Celestial Queen, for Nelson, which put into Portland to repair damages received in the collision with the Wansbeck, have sailed again for their respective destinations. The Johanna Rudolph (brig), bound from Manilla to Sydney, has been burnt at the Philiipines.

The Sunday Observance League las' night passed a resolution strongly condemnatory of the action of the Government in calling on men employed on the railways and wharves at Christchurch and Lyttelton to work on Sunday when required. At a private meeting of capitalists yesterday it was resolved to form a Joint Stock Company with a capital of LIOO,OOO, in 2,000 shares of L 5 each, to construct a branch line of railway from South Kakaia on the Great Southern railway to Ashburton Forks, passing through very fine agricultural country. The land sales for the month realised L 41,452.
