The Evening Mail. THURSDAY, JANUARY 3, 1878.

Sir. Perry has been presented with a mat, and, desiring not to be under a compliment to the unknown donors, who he evidently thinks acquired it by unfair means, he announces this evening that the same may be restored to its rightful owner by making application at the Swan Hotel, Thames-st. The County Council mat is missing, and it is probable that that ju the possession of Mr. Perry will be identified as theirs. We suppose that its removal was the work o£ some larrikins, who, we have no doubt, thought their practical joking immensely funny. It would prove so if they were brought prominently before the public. The usual monthly meeting of the Committee of the Mechanics' {..jtitute will be held this evening, at eight o'clock. The Annual fees for wine and spirit licenses were due on the nr*t day of the month. The Municipal Council wilj meet this evening. The Waitaki Acclimatisation Society will hold its usual monthly meeting to-morrow, at twelve o'clock, at the City Council Chambers. The " Bankers v. the Town" will test their mettle at a game of cricket next Saturday, at half-past two o'clock. The following are names of the players chosen on both sides : Bankers : Corbett, Dupre, Fenwick, F., Fen wick, 0-., Filleul, Lowe, Macdonald, M'Jannet, Keid, Rhodes, and Tempest. Town : Atherton, Calmer, Booth, Church, Edwards, Ferens, Hiekey, Pickett, Sumpter, Taylor, and Walls. The Alleen troupe, which has been performing so successfully through the Colony, will appear in Oamaru on the 7th instant. We learn from a perusal of the advertisement that the Company comprises nine artistes, and that the performance is one of great variety. It is a pity that they did not appear here during the holidays. Not only would they have played to good houses, but our numerous visitors from the country would have had an opportunity of enjoying themselves in a maimer that is only afforded many of them about once a year. Peacock's Wharf, at Lyttelton, has been purchased from Messrs. P. Cunningham and Co., for the sum of L 20.750, including the two cranes-. The total expenses of the three leading Episcopal churches of New York are— Grace Church, 15,000 dols.; Advent, 17,000 dols.; Trinity, 34,00!) dols. Ihe music at Grace Church costs 4000 dols. per annum.
