At tii.' !Je:.=ul-.'itt Magistrate's Court this morning, before Messrs. Numpter aiul Maude, J.V'.s., Mathev Kuighton ■was fined ss. for letting oft" lire works lit Thames-street on New Year's eve. (ieorge Moxliam was charged with throwing stones at Constable Smith during the execution of his duty. ' It appeared that while the constable was ill the aet of taking Knighton to the lock-up, a number of persons commenced throwing' stones at liini, >everal of which struck him. Sub-Inspector f-nuth happening to come along the street at the time., saw Moxliam throw a stone at Constable Smith, and apprehended him. Moxham was fined LI. with the option of seven days' imprisonment. Several complaints having lately been . made to the police with regard to breaches of the Employment of Females Act, 1873, Seigeant iieattie has been appointed at Inspector under the Act. On New Year's eve, the Sergeant paid a vi.-it to the various dressmaking establishments in town, but in only one case was a breach of the Act discovered. It is likely, wc believe, that this infringement of the law will form the subject of Magisterial inquiry shortly.
