Some people like to do the thing grand. They delight in making their friends believe that their cash, and their liberality also, is unlimited. An instance came under our notice to-day. In one of the rooms in the Parliament lobbies set apart especially for certain members of the Civil Service, three empty champagne bottles have been noticed on the table for the last four mornings. The telegraph boys and the unfortunate fellows who prowl about the lobbies button-holing members, have watched these bottles with eager eyes and inwardly regretted that they could not "do the thing" in like manner. They little knew, however, that the same three bottles had kept up appearances for the last week. They were opened on Monday evening late, emptied, and carefully stowed away. Since then gingerbeer lias done duty, but the bottles have been placed 011 the table every evening to carry out the delusion. And so Solomon's experience is verified that all is vanity and vexation of spirit.— Wellington A rff us.
