OTEPOPO ROAD BOARD.

The monthly meeting of this Hoard was held on Friday, .'M)!h November. Present —Messrs. Anderson (chairman), Henderson (treasurer), Ross, Russell, New lands, Darroch, Mitchell, M'Donald, Marshall, and Watson,

Mr, Henderson proposed, and Mr. Marshall .seconded, that the minutes of last meeting be adopted as mid. The outward correspondence wait read and approved, and tho inward considered as follows :

1. A letter from Messrs. Rohm, Peach, and Reid, requesting the formation of tho road branching oft' at the Railway Hotel. ■ —Referred to the Engineer for report.

2. Dr. Smith reported a case of typhoid fever, and was directed to report further as to the probable cause. U. A letter from Mr. A. Sim vr tho deviation of a road on his property, which was agreed to, provided the Board is put to no expense. The Clerk was instructed to obtain a copy of the "Valuation Roll for the Otepopo Riding from tho County Council. The following applications for the olHco of Ranger for the next six months were received ; —Robert Forbes, L2O and driving fees ; Charles Smyth, Bs. per day ; \Y. Lawson, L 25 and driving fees, or LHO without them ; E. A. Samson, LIS ; David Cox, LI per week and driving fees; John Adams, L2O and driving fees ; James Jordan, L 5 per month. Mr. Newlands proponed, and Mr. M'Donald seconded, that tho applicants be appointed. -<■ Mr. Ross moved, as an amendment, that Mr. Samson be appointed. Seconded by Mr. Henderson, and carried.

Mr. McDonald moved, and Mr. Marshall seconded, that the Clerk and Engineer take the necessary steps under the second part of the Public Works Act, 1876, to obtain the land required for the Breakneck deviation of road. Mr. Darroch moved, that the tenders for contract No. 57 (Breakneck roao) he opened, and the propriety of accepting one afterwards discussed. Seconded by Mr. M'Donald. Mr. floss moved, as an amendment, That the tenders be not opened by the Board, but that the Clerk open them and return the deposit money to the tenderers. Seconded by Mr. Watson. On being put three voted for the amendment, and four for the motion, which was declared carried. The following tenders were then opened :—Contract No. 57: Walter Knight and Henry Bignell, L 307 os. 4d; James Robertson and John Bigger, Ll9O 16s, bridge only ; James Jordan, LBl 10s.— rf—Contract No. 59 : James Hogan, L 49 ; ' James Hill, Llll 10s ; Alex. Gilchrist, L 96 14s. ; T. Flaherty, LllO 16s. Mr. Marshall moved, "That the lowest tender for contract 59 be accepted, and also that for contract 57, provided the clerk can obtain a written guarantee that no proceedings will be taken against the Board by the owner of the land required for the necessary deviation, for entry thereon before it can be legally acquired." Mr. Ross moved, as an amendment, " That no contract be accepted for contract 57 at present." Seconded by Mr. Watson. The motion was carried by a majority of one. Mr. Ross protested against the action of the Board in accepting a tender for work to be done on land that was still private property. The Clerk was directed to invite tenders for contracts 58 to 61. On the motion of Mr. Newlands, seconded by Mr. Mitchell, the Clerk was directed to call for tenders for plans ordex-ed from the Engineer when the same are sent in, in time for the succeding

meeting. Mr. Mitchell moved, " That the Engineer be requested to report on the state of the Kakanui Bridge." On the motion of Mr. Henderson, seconded by Mr. Ross, the Clerk was directed to ask Mr. Sim to appoint a day and hour to meet the Sydney members and Mr. Ross on the ground re road deviation in block YII. The Clerk was instructed to acquaint Mr. Heron that the cross road between the All-day Bay and Pleasant Valley roads will be required soon, and that the gates must be removed. On the motion of Mr. M'Donald, seconded by Mr. Darroch, the rate of 6d. per £ for the nine months ending March 31st, 1878, decided on at last meeting, was confirmed, and the same made payable on or before December 20th next. The next meeting was ordered to be called for Friday, December 14. Several accounts were passed for payment, and the Board adjourned.
