The Evening Mail. WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 1877.
There was no business of any kind transacted at the R- M. Court this morning. A supplementary British ma'l via San Francisco, will close at the Post Office, Oamaru, to-morrow, at 2.45 p.m. The secretary of the Mechanics' Institute acknowledges the receipt of a valuable addition to the library in the shape of the " Life of the Ven. Archdeacon Williams," in two volumes, by Mr. Hugh Carlton, of Auckland. The gymnasium in connection with the Waitaki Amateur Athletic Club was opened last evening. About thirty members of the. club were presect, and were put through a variety of performances during the evening. As we predicted, the residents of Oamaru and the surrounding districts have not been behind those of other parts of the colony in bestowing substantial aid to the suffering millions of famine-stricken India. The amount realised up to the present time is L 679 10s. lUd. There are still several lists out, and it is probable that the sum raised will reach L7OO by the time the colleetiou is closed. His Worship the Mayor to-day forwarded a drafttoDunedinforL4oo, making in all L 650 remitted from Oamaru. The account will be closed on the Ist December, when the balance will be sent to the Mayor of Dunedin. We have been requested to state that the daily acknowledgments of amounts received will be discontinued, and the whole of the subscriptions received from the present time will be acknowledged when the lists are finally closed. A balance sheet wiil also be published when the affairs are wound up. A meeting of the Committee sf the Waitaki Amateur Athletic Club was held at the Gymnasium last evening, when there were present —Messrs. O'Aleagher (in the chair), Thornton. Bennett, M' Donald, Fen wick, and Lintott (Hon. Sec.). Several new members were elected, and Judges, &c., appointed for the sports to be held on the 30th inst. It was arranged to give prizes to the amount of L4O, exclusive of the Ladies' Cup, to be competed for at the forthcoming sports. It was decided that no competitor should be allowed to appear on the Ground in professional costume (tights and trunks). A vote of thanks was accorded to Mr. N. Lane for giving the use of a ground on which to hold the sports. This concluded the business.
The fourteenth annual show of the Northern Agricultural and Pastoral Association will commence to-morrow, and so far promises in every way to eclipse all its pre-dece-sors. The number of exhibits is much larger than has ever previously beeu the case, while the quality of the exhibits will also be found to possess even greater merit than hither-.0. It may not be uninteresting to state that the number of entries at the show is laryer than those for the late Canterbury Show, the numbers being—( ! amaru, 983; anterbury. 922. Besides this ic must be taken into account that there wer« a number of exhibits at the Ltter show which a e not included in the Oama-u Show. Already great preparations ore being made for getting exhibits ready for exhibition, and a splendid display of live stock may be anticipated. A meeting of the Waitaki County Acclimatisation Society was held this alternoon at Messrs. Co mell and Clowes' offices. There were present —Messrs. Horton (in the chair), Steward, Wheat'ey, Allen, Duncan, M'Leunan, and Connell (lion, secretary). The minutes of the previous meeting having been confirmed, a letter was read from the Hon. the Colonial Secretary, intimating that the society had been placed on the list for the next shipment of salmon and white fish ova from California. Several letters were also read from the Hon. M. Holmes, setting forth the steps he had taken to forward the interests of the Society, and intimating that the Oamaru Creek and the Waiareka and Waianakaru streams would be thrown open for fishing, aud that the Society would be empowered to issue fishing and shooting licenses. A vote of thanks was accorded the Hon. Mr. Holmes for his services on behalf of the Society. Messrs. Reid, Borton, and Allen were appointed trustees to hold land for the Society. [The meeting had not concluded when our reporter left, j The Indian Famine Relief Fund Committee met yesterday afternoon at Mr. C. G. Moore's (office, there being present—His Worship the Mayor, Mr. Blackburne (Hon. Sec), Rev. Father Coleman, Messrs. G. T. Feuwick. C. G. Moore, and. J. T. Evans. Mr. Teschemaker's list, with the amount collected (Ll3 Is), was handed in, together with some other amounts. His Worship the Mayor, as Treasurer to the Committee, reported that including the sums just received the total amount paid in to date to the credit of the fund was L 676 Is lOd. There were several lists not as yet returned, so that it was possible the fund might be still further augmented. As requested by last meeting, he had forwarded a draft for L2oo to the Dunedin Committee, the draft being made out in the first instance in favor of the Governor of Madras Presidency. This, however, had been returned by Mr. Leary, the Treasurer to the Dunedin Committee, with the suggestion that t.e draft should be made in favor of the Treasurer to the Fund, Dunedin; and intimating that the Committee there were sending their remittance by cable advice as from Otago, and not as from Dunedin only. He had accordingly sent another draft, in acknowledging which Mr. Leary stated that he should have much pleasure in specially mentioning the Oamaru contribution when communicating with the Lord Mayor of London. He suggested that the meeting should authorise him to pay the advertising accounts and forward L4OO to Dunedin the next day. On the motion of the Rev. Father Coleman, it was resolved that the local papers be thanked for inserting the adveitisements at half rates, and that the Mayor, as Treasurer, be authorised to pay the accounts. It was decided to write to the following gentlemeu, requesting them to return their ii-ts without delay : —Messrs. A. Votes of thanks were also passed to his Worship the Mayor, as chairman and treasurer, t•> Mr. Blackburne, for his services as honorary secretary, and to Mr. C. G. Moore, for the use of his office.
