A special meeting of the City Council was held this afternoon to consider Mr. Napier Bell's report on Mr. Climie's drainage scheme.. A letter from Mr Ciiniie was read, stating that Mr. Bell's objections were founded mainly, if not entirely, on a misconstruction of the circumstances and of the schema, and asking that the committeo should adjourn for a week in to give him (.tine to prepare an answer to Mr. Boil's report, and promising to show that the objections are either unfounded or answered in the report itself. Tiie council adjourned accordingly. The Northevn Land Loan and Building Company have extended the time for the receipt of application for shares to the 14th instant.

Fifty thousand salmon ova ex City of Sydney arrived last night, per Wanaka, in splendid condition. They were placed in ponds at once, and from their appearance are expected to hatch in about ten days.

The ship St. Leonard's arrived last night. She left London on the 30th July, and had a fair average passage. She brings about 50 passengers ; all well. No casualties occurred on the vo}'age.

The north-west winds during the past few days have caused heavy floods in the Waimakariri river, which overflowed between Christchurch andKaiapoi,damaging the railway line and stopping communication.

Richard Winter, solicitor's clerk, was this afternoon committed for trial on a charge of forging a cheque for L 3. He was clerk to Mr. Lee, and it was his name he forged. The prisoner is the same -person who, some months ago, was charged by a man named Schultz with robbing him of L4O in bank notes while Schultz was drunk. That charge was not proceeded with, and Winter brought an action against Schultz for malicious prosecution, but lost the case.
