POLITICAL GOSSIP.

[by telegraph, from our own correspondent.] Wellington, October 22. A 'caucus of the Opposition was held to-day, when thirty-three attended and eight others were accounted. A resolution was passed unanimously electing Major Atkinson as leader of the party. Some unsanguine members of the Opposition say that eight names accounted for at the caucus to-day cannot be depended on. They had not given any authority to put their names down as supporters. Mr. Seymour moved, and Sir Robert Douglas seconded, the appointment of Major Atkinson as leader. Some disappointment is expressed because Mr. Stafford declines to take the leadership, as he is going Home at the end of the session.
