The annual, general meeting of the Oainaru Cricket Club will be held at the Royal Hotel this evening at 8 o'clock.
We understand that during the summer months it is the intention of the railway authorities to arrange that the departure of the last trains from Oamaru should take place at a late hour—somewhat in accordance with the system adopted last summer. This will meet with the approval of everybody. We hope that there will be no more early winter departures, and that the summer time-table that will be arranged at the commencement of next month wjll be observed all the year through, with, perhaps, slight modifications. The only case down for hearing at the R sident Magistrate's Court this morning was a charge of drunkenness against Albert Hind, who was fin.d 10s., w.th the alternative of three days' imprison neut.
We observe that a meeting of the Commit t-e of the Oamaru Hospital has been called for Tuesday n -xt. It appears to have been forgotten that Mrs. Newshaui's concert fur the benefit of that institution takes piace on the same evening. Mr. Jeffreys announces elsewhere that he will be u iable to preach to-m >rrow evening in the Volunteer Hail, as previously advertised. A temperance meeting will be held in the Waitaki Hall at halt-past seven o'clock this evening, which will be addressed by Mrs. Goldsm.ih, of Waimate, Mr. W. H Puddicombe, and others. Al interested in the cause of temperance are invited to attend. Mr. W.. H. Puddicombe and Mrs. Goldsmith will hold Divine Servicj in connection with the Primitive Methodist Society iti Waitaki Hall, at eleven o'click to-morrow morning and half-past six evening. The programme for Mrs. Newsham's Classical Concert appears in another column. The items of which it i> composed are par ticularly novel, and have s Jdom or never been previously produced in the Colony. The character of the entertainment will be such as to ensure the approval of those who are admirers of classical music, as w r ell as of those who do not aspire so high. The instrumental items are culled from the most popular and meritorious creations of the great masters. From Beethoven's multitudinous works, we observe, h-ivo bei'ii t-eleeted those compositions which have ever had the effect of enlisting the sympathies and enchaining the attention of any audience who may have had the pleasure of listening to them. They will be performed upon the instruments for which they were written ; and that alone is at least an achievement in Oamaru. From that composer's choicest pianoforte works has been chosen the solo which will be performed by Mrs. Nevvshain. The piece is therefore one of the iiuest of this great composer's pianoforte compositions, and will be played by a lady than whom there is no better musician and pianoforte performer in ihe Colony. The selections from the " Creation " aud " Samson"' will be sung by those who have both ihe voices and the ability to sing, and will be accompanied by stringed instruments. The programme is a thoroughly good one throughout, and will doubtless bring together a large audience.
The muster of the head-quarters companies of Volunteers last night was not so good as it ought to hive been, although the attendance "of the Cadets a=id No. 1 C-unpany was much better than that of the Artillery. I he drill was maintained with spirit for a longer time than usual, and consisted of light infantry movements, manua , platoon, and bayonet eereises. It was announced that another drill would take place next Friday, on which occasion those absent would be fined, the said tines, if not forthwith paid, to be summarily recovered. On Monday next a meeting of ofti er.-> will take place at C iptain Sumpter's office, to arrange for the Hampden battalion para le.
