In the Resident Magistrate's Court today, James Duff sued the City Corporation for LSO damages, sustained to his horse and cart through a trench in Prin-ces-street having been imperfectly filled up. Judgment was given for L.'io and costs. ♦ WELLINGTON. October 12. The Anne Melhuish, just arrived, reports being in company in the Straits with the brig Emperor, from Newcastle, bound for Lvttelton. October 13. The thix - d trial of Haggarty, for fireraising, took place yesterday before a fresh jury and fresh Judge (the Chief
Justice). The jury were locked up from | 6 till 9.30. When sent for by the Judge, they still disagreed, and were again locked up. At midnight, the Judge Bent for them again, wlien they agreed on a verdict of Guilty, coupled with a recommendation to mercy. It is said that the jurymen compromised matters on condition that there was this recommendation. The master of the Lunatic Asylum obtained a small prnting plant some years a"o for the instruction and amusement <>f patients, and has how commenced the publication of a small montily paper containing Asylum news and other matter. A public meeting was held this afternoo l to considiT wiiat steps to take respecting the Indian Famine Relief Fund. There was a large attendance, the Mayor being in the chair, and Sir Craoroft Wilson, the Dean of Ohristchureh, Mr. Geo. Gould, and Mr. John Ollivier, the principal speakers. A large Committee was appointed to collect subscriptions, and il was resolved to try to get a special offertory in all the churches throughout the Province on Sunday week. A subscription list was opened, and over L4OO was promised in the room. October 13. Murpliy, a money lender, and Whyte, the men charged with conspiring to defraud the creditors of Mr. Hamlin, storekeeper, have been committed for trial. The Lyttelton Harbour Hoard has resolved tu issue debentures of LIOO each, bearing interest of G per cent., for L 1.00,000. for the improvement of the harbour. The debentures will be repayable' within 31 years. The Indian Famine Relief Fund Committee are working energetically. At a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce t lis afternoon, a motion was carried recommending the Government to erect a new post oliiee in the centre of the town.
