October 10.

The Select Committee of the Upper House reports, in reference to the charges made by Mr. J. H. Wilson against Judge Rogan, that there were no grounds for attributing corrupt or improper motives to him in his judicial decisions. Mr Wilson himself says "throughout the whole of the unhappy case," he never intended to attribute such motives to Mr. Rogan. The question now is whether Mr? Rogan acted illegally in respect to certain deeds, and tiie Committee have declined t > deal with the points of law. The Agent-General, reports that the Rangitikei left Plymouth for Lyttelton on August 12th, with 277 emigrants. 'J he Mataura, from Plymouth, sa led on the same day for Napier witii 184 ; and the Marlborough, from Glasgow for the'Bluli", on August"l 6, with 185 emigrants. October 11. A slight shock of earthquake occurred shortly "before 9 o'clock last night. o CHRISTCHURCH. October 10. The Governor has commuted the sentence of death passed on Karl Kehde for murder to that of imprisonment for life. At the Resident Magistrate's Court today, M. Murphy and H. Wykes, commission agents, were charged with conspiring to defraud a man named Hammill. It appeared that Hammill recently applied to Murphy for a loan. Murphy advised him to sell his stock, none of which had been paid for, and to tell his creditors his business did not pay. Hammill agreed to do so. Murphy . paid : L2O, and with Wykes removed the stock, worth LBO, on Saturday night, finishing at 5 o'clock on Sunday morning. The case was adjourned, and bail has been refused. It is rumoured that the projected Alliance Insurance Company has completely fallen through. Tiie Primate delivered the decision of the Episcopal Church in the Kaiapoi case to-day ; also the penalty he, as Bishop of the Diocese, imposed on the Rev. Mr. Carlyon. The former was to the effect that Mr. Carlyon had acted contrary to the teaching of the English Church ; the latter ordered his suspension for one month, when, if he does not retract, he will be dismissed from his cure. Mr. Carlyon replied at length that he had not acted wrongly, and he does not seem likely to retract. October 11.

A public -meeting will be held on Friday evening to consider what steps to take regarding the Famine Relief Fund. KUMARA. October 11. The evidence of the police in the murder case is still being taken. The statements made to them by the prisoner are considered to be suspicious looking. The evidence for the Crown is espected to be completed to-day, and the evidence for the defence will be taken to-morrow. * NEW PLYMOUTH. October 10. The Mayor has called a meeting re Indian Famine Fund. The ministers have actively taken tire matter up ; committees have been appointed, and the district is to be actively canvassed for subscriptions.
