Th-. jury were locked up all night, and not agreeing as to a verdict, were dismissed this morning at ten o'clock A new trial is fixed for to-morrow. — ■ » CHRISTCHURCH. October 2. In the Supreme Court. Mathew Henderson, formerly a storekeeper on the Canterbury railways, charged with embezzling 255., the property of the Queen, was acquitted. Karl Kehde, for murder, will be tried tomorrow. October 3. Mr. Driver, of Dunedin, who is at preseut here, has concluded the sale of Messrs. Rh.ides' Seadowu Estate, near Timaru, consisting of 933J acres of freehold land, 800 pure.cattle, an-1 12,009 long-wool sheep, for LI 15,000, to Messrs. Fleming and Hedley, of < lamaru. In reply to the Agricultural and Pastoral Association, the Government have made concessions both in the goods and passenger railway charges. The AccLmatmVon Society has passed a resolution for the rishitig season to commence on October lo'th. The t'ial of Karl Kehde for wilful murder was commenced this morning, and is still proceeding. TIMARU. October 2. A full meeting of the members of the Harbour Board was he'd to-day, to consider the plans f( r the Breakwater. Thirteen were received, opened, and at considerable length. The l!o ird sat till five in the af-'e-noon Two plans, with the nvittoe* "P. Nagthaos" and "Timaru Commerce and Agriculture," were finally decided on to be forwarded to the Government. One of these is supposed to be Allan and stumbles', which was before the Board a short while ago. «, GRAHAMS TOWN. October 2. The allotment of shares in the Union Insurance Oompauy, lMcnvecl to-day, has not given satisfaction. Several applicants, men of capital, and in a position to put business in the way of the Company, have received no shares a£s all. Shares are quoted to-day, buyers, Ires./- • Y ■ ♦ & HOKITIKA. 7 October 3. Two young men named Thomas Wiltshire and George Greave* have been drowned in the Hokitiki River. Thiy were engaged in taking a boat from town to the Maori Reserve Sawmill, when <uu of the h 'rses suddenly slipped into a orab-h >le, upsetting his rider an i pulling the other lv>rse after him. The men were on the top of the water for some time and fl'ated about a hundred yards. A sailor from the Clio swam within ten feet of one of the drowning men, but could not rescue him. The bodies have not yet been found.
