(FEOM OUR OWN CORIIESPONDEXTS.) ♦ DUNEDIJST. October 3. In the Supreme Court, Jame3 Cheesman, for manslaughter atßalclutha, was sentenced to one month's imprisonment, without hard labour. Thos. Walter. Longuet, late Postmaster at Palmerston, for embezzlement, received two years-' imprisonment on all charges (six). Mr. Chapman's appliea ion for a special jury in George Pioudfoot's case was opposed by the prosecution, who contemplate employing counsel from Christchurch. The hearing of tne ca<e wa3 fixed fixed'r'-r Monday, October 15, before a special ju.iy. Penuyend was found guilty of forgery, and sentence was deferred. IVir. Hag<dtt to-day mentioned that Mr. Jones' case "would, be heard before a .special jury, counsel coming from Wellington to defend him. He has telegraphed to know whether he is to be tried this sitting. The stock assessment paid here was T.52.00J, and the approximate in settlement L6OOO.
