WELLINGTON.

' September 29. The deaths in this city this month were 39 ; the births, 23 ; marriages, 18. Mr. Cakes., the well-known contractor, who has failed, declares his liabilities as L 10,644; assets, L 315.

The Customs revenue collected at the port of Wellington for the quarter ending to-day, amounts to L 44,889, as compared with L 44,951 for the same period last year. The revemie for the month was L 10",339 ; that for September last year, L 14.689.

Last night, a house in Turnbull-street caught fire through a candle being left burning near window-curtains while the occupiers were out. The fire was extinguished by tha neighbours before the Brigade could be called out. October 1.

Dr Lemon reports that telegraph communication remains interrupted between Batavia and Singapore, and that European telegrams aru now brought, as were those received on Saturday, by steamer from Singapore to Batavia. Steamers are due at Batavia on October 3rd, 11th, 17th, 27th, and 31st. TAURANGA. October 1. A large fire occurred at the Rev. Archdeacon "Brown's last night. The kitchen and store-room, which was full of goods lately received from En;land, were destroyed. The fire originated through the servant leaving a candle burning while in the dining-room at prayers. The buildings were detached. There was no wind, or nothing could have saved the main building. Owing to a splend.d supply of water from an underground brick reservoir, and all hands working hard, the fire was got under in two hours.
