AUSTRALIAN NEWS.
(FER WAKATIPU, AT WELLINGTON.) Melbourne, September 21. The ship Ambassador, from New York, had a disastrous passage. On Juno lGth she was struck by a terrific sea, causing great destruction and loss of life. The captain, second officer, and three of the crew were washed overboard and drowned. The vessel put into the Cape to refit. Portions of wreckage were seen near Apollo Bay. It is said that two men were seen clinging to a spar 50ft. long. The steamer Pharo.j has been sent out in search. L. E. Lee, who published the Police Gazette has been acquitted on the charge of libel. 10,000 bushels of malt have been sold at 10s. The captain of the Macduff is to be proceeded against for running down a smack. The Adelaide Government is arranging with the Orient line of steamers to bring out a limited number of immigrants. 10,000 bushels of wheat have been sold at 6's. Gd.
Adelaide, September 21. 1100 immigrants are now on the road from England. The Burra Mine has been closed, on account of the low pi ice of copper.
Sydney, September 22. The inquiry into the charge against George W. Faithfull, of attempting to assassinate H. C. Rusheld, Government Astronomer, has been concluded. '1 he accused has been committed for trial.
Queensland, September 22. The whole of West Morton is barren of vegetation as if blasted by a simoon. Cattle are dead in hundreds along the watercourses.
