Thank Heaven —and we say it with due respect and with a full knowledge of its meaning—the. Oamaru Municipal Council intend not. to he beaten by the sly-grog sellers of Oamaru. A meeting is called for this evening to deal with the sly-grog question, and we trust Unit men who have hitherto proved themselves endowed sufliciendy with common sense to enable them to successfuliv combat the diilictilti.s they have been called upon to encounter, will concert measures whereby the unscrupulous get-money-at-auy-pri.. c individuals, who have obtained for Oamaru most unenviable notoriety, will be compelled to earn an honest living, in nature intended them to do. by following the plough, assisting in macadamising roads, etc. If any proof were wanted of the necessity for compulsory State education, we would point to the slygrog sellers of Oamaru.

The tenders for the new gasometer will be opened at a. special meeting of the Municipal Council to be held this evening.
Mr. .T. L. Hall's Gaiety Company will appear in Oamaru next Monday, after a most successful and lengthy season in Dunedin. It has now become the rule, rather than the exception, for ordinary Colonial_ theatrical cmiinames to make losses, and this fact has hat"!/the effect of weeding out mountebanks and placing legitimate actors on a fair footing. Mr. Hall's stay in Oamaru will be necessarily limited ; but it is evidently his determination to utilise the small space of time at his disposal here to the best advantage, for his programme comprises pieces that'will most assuredly be so popular as to draw full houses. '' * >ur Girls," ' : Our Dad," and "Kip Van Winkle," would, we should think, run for a fortnight in Oamaru, seeing that the company is a full one. including, to t:ie artistes that have previously appeared here, the names of Mrs. J. L. Hall, Mr. Oily Dccring, and Mr. O'Brien.
Mr. Button launched, himself forward as the scapegoat for the deputation that waited on the Judges. Mr. Bus ton expressed regret at having formed a unit in that deputation ; and k°w;<s solely owinj; to hi-3 defective memory that he found his way to the Court that morning : for, as he explained the matter, had lie recollected that the mystic letters M.H.R. followed the patronymic' of Button, that deputation would have been—well, a Button short.— Neiv Zealand Times. 5
