DEPUTATION TO THE COUNTY COUNCIL.
A deputation from the Kakanui Road Board, consisting of Messrs. Booth, Gemmell, and Elder, waited upon the County Council, at their meeting- to-day. for the purpose of conferring with that body with reference to the formation of a road through portions of the Ka.kanui and Oienopo Road Districts, and crossing the Island Stream. Mr. Booth drew the attention of the Council to the desirability of making the road, and pointed out that it would afford a. nearer approach to the rail vay-station, bot'i fr-ma the Oteporo district and Kakanui The road, if formed, would be a ipracticable < ne in •ill weathers, while the present road w is si ogcther impassable m I wet weather, and was highly dangerous ; lit could not be made a good road, owing to its being subject to floods. A deputa-j
tion from the Kakanui Road Board had waited upon the Otepopo Board, which had consented to vote a certain sum of money in aid of the work, and had made other' proposals, but these the Kakanui Board could not see its way to receive. He explained to the Council the situation of the proposed road, and stated the relative positions of the two Boards in connection therewith. He pointed out that the road would join on to a county road, and urged that the Council should either vote a sum in aid of the work or else take over the road as a county road. He stated that the estimated cost of the whole jwork, including the construction of a bridge over the stream dividing the two I road districts, was LISOO. He said that | seeing that loss of life had arisen from [the state of the old road, it was urgently nocess-iry that some decision should be definitely arrived at without delay. A map showing the line of road was laid on the table, and, after the deputation had answered a number of questions, the Chairman intimated that the Council would take the matter into consideration at a later period of the meeting, and would forward a reply to tho deputation. The deputation then withdrew.
