(HiOM Till-: riM'.SS AOKM'V.) . * AUCKLAND. September 4. Groat, interest was felt here in the, race between the old Sydney trading steamer Hero, and the Union Company's steamer Hotorua. There was a large amount of betting. The steamers left Auckland within a quarter of an hour of each other. A cable message to the agents states that the Hero got in lirst. The Rotorua knocked two blades off her propeller. Morris Hymen, a partner in a wholesale firm, was remanded on the charge of forging the names to eight transfers of shares. LAWRENCE. September •!-. A railway accid-'nt occurred yesterday. The midday train ran into a landslip caused by the recent lmavy rains near the Hound Hill tunnel. Tie train went off the line, but no one was seriously injured. The midday mails did not arrive until eight p.m. A meeting of Roman Catholics was held last night, ir the Education Bill, and resolutions similar in efl'ect to those of the same denominational meetings held elsewhere, were passed. The County Council meets to-day, and Mr. Horace Bastings takes his seat as Chairman for the first time.
