The usual fori nightly meeting of the Municipal Council was held last evening at the Council Chambers. There were present : His Worship the Mayor (in the chair), Councillors Mainland. Letters were read from Mr. .J. Black and Mr. Benjamin Williams, with reference to the Corporation Solicitor having entered upon and re-iaken possession of the Garden .Reserve, in consequence of lion-fultibneiit, of the conditions of the lea.se. Tim letters asked that the Committee should meet Mr. Black and confer on the matter. The letters also asked that a new lease of that portion of the ivservo not required by the Council should bo granted to Mr. Black.-It was resolved that: while the Council recognises no legal claim on the part of .Mr. Williams or Mr. Black, with reference to the (Jardeii Reserve, it is willing to grant, a new tenancy to Mr. J. C. Black for the term of live years, for such pun ion as the Counoil does not require for its own purposes, and upon terms to be drawn up by the Reserves Committee. <;as kxj'f.nmox. A lengthy report from the Engineer was read showing the amount of progress of the various contracts in hand. With reference to that portion of the report which suggested that some further deepening of the channel of the creek to prevent damage being done, it was resolved that the Engineer should prepare plans, specifications, and estimate of cost of the wnikt required to be done in the Oamaru Crt ek. With regard to the recommendation tliat Reed-street should be formed to the full width between Torridge and Ouse streets, the Engineer was instructed to prepare the necessary plans and specifications and call for tenders for the work. The Committee having recommended that that portion of the Esplanade north of Coquet-street be leased f-r grazing purposes, reserving the right lo plant, and the right of free ingress and egress to the public, it was resolved, " That the Esplanade be leased in paddock:; fur one year (reserving the right of ingress and egress to the public, and the right to plant and improve), on terms and conditions to be drawn up by the Corporation Solicitor, under instructions of the Reserves Committee. Lease to be sold by public auction. Also that the reserve in fc-tvtrn-strt et be leased for live years, ■with right of redemption at any time, on tajn.ii-t of compensation for fencing." The next recommendations of the Committee, to the effect that the north-east end of Severn-street be made up to the permanent level, that a footbridge be erected on the south side of the culvert, and a lump placed thereat, and that a footpath be formed on the south side of the school fence, arrangements to be made for preventing regular dray traffic across the ground, were adopted. The Committee reported that they had taken steps towards the erection of a picket fence along the western side of the Cricket Giound, the materials of the old ftnee to be used for fencing Itcheii-street embankment. With reference to the recommendation that a light bridge be erected across the creikin Stewaid-street, on condition of the l/iill-ilud Tit.st agreeing to a necessary divusion of the course of the Limekiln Gully Creek, the Engineer was instructed to pit pare plans and specifications for the bridge, application to be made to t:.e Drill-shed Trust for leave to divert the creek. STATEMENT OF WORKS REQUIRED. Councillor Liddle, according to notice, moved "That the Engineer be inEtituttd to pre pare and lay upon the table, a schedule of w oiks necessary to be carried, out during the year. The motion lapsed for want of a seconder. XOTICES OF MOTION". Councillor Liddle gave notice that he would move that the Engineer should be instructed to prepare specifications and call for tenders for the laying of a strip of rough shingle, of a width of from 15 to 20 feet in the centre of the following streets :—Cross-street, from Severn-street to Reid-street; Reid-street to the North School; Torridge-street to Thames-street; Eden-street, from Thames-street to the bridge. Councillor Procter gave notice of the following motions for the next meeting : 1. " That the question of sly-grog-selling be thoroughly gone into with a view to its ultimate and speedy suppression." 2. " That the footpath in front of the Council Clambers be curbed, channelled, and arDbalted, and that concrete kerb and channel be used as an experiment. The Council then adjourned.
