Oats, L 4 ; bran, Is Id ; wheat, 4s 4d ; hams, 9kl ; bacon, 9d ; maize, 4a 6d ; pollard, 7s 6d ; potatoes, L 3 10s to L 4 ; cheese, 7d. August 24. At a meeting of the Roman Catholics, held last night, to consider the Education Bill, Bishop Redwood, who occupied the chair, in criticising the Bill, said that education without religion was a mockery, a sham, and a plague. Resolutions were passed condemning the principles of the Bdl, its invasion of parental rights, its exceptional pressure upon Catholics, and its unfairness to the Catholic schoolmasters. It was also resolved, if the Bill passed, to agitate in order to bring about its modification or repeal. His Lordship was requested to forward the resolutions to the Government. A large quantity of land, situated outside the Town Belt, and separated from town by a high ridge, was auctioned yesterday, as a new township, and realised an average of LIOO per acre. «> CHRISTCHURCH. August 23. Good milling wheat scarce, 7s ; Hour, Ll7 to LIS, stocks low ; oats have a better enquiry from the Australian Colonit s, where fears are entertained of a drought ; market firm at 3s 6d for feed and 3s 9d for milling ; barley, 3s Gd to ss, dull ; hams and bacon, 8d ; cheese, 6id ; butter, 9d to lOd ; potatoes getting low in stock, value 555. Heavy wheat shipments are being made. As there are 6000 separate applications for shares in tiie Union Insurance Company it will take five or six weeks to allot the shares. «. . GREYMOUTH. August 23. The three-masted schooner St. Kilda, from Melbourne, while being towed in this morning by the Despatch, caught the current with her bow, and was thrown on the north beach. Tiie tug tried to take her out, but nearly shared the same fate, as the tow-line caught on a snag, and was lost. The St. Kilda is in a bad position. The cargo will be saved, but the vessel will require to be lifted and launched.
AUCKLAND. August 23. The Stella has returned from Cape Maria Van Diemen. Much indignation lias been expressed that she did not visit some islands near Otora Beach, which is strewn with wreckage, but was 15 miles out of the Stella's course. This would have set at rest suspicions entertained that some survivors may be starving there. Captain Fairchild had no instructions regarding the matter.
