NORTH OTAGO LICENSED VICTUALLERS' ASSOCIATION.

A meeting of the members of the North Otago Licensed Victuallers' Association took place yesterday afternoon at the Star and Garter Hotel. Present—Messrs. B. Richardson (chair), Newey, Markham, Perry, Dooley, Maitland, Cairns, Grant, and G. Brown.

Mr. Richardson informed the meeting that Mr. Bailey, President of the Canterbury L.V. Association, had written for information regarding the action the N.O.L.V. Association intended to take with reference to the Local Option Bill. After reading the resolutions passed by the former Association, he stated that he had communicated by wire with the representatives for this district in tho Assembly, informing them that if the Bill passed it would be calamitous to L.V.'a interests in Uatnaru, in which si v-grog shops were already too plentiful. He, on behalf of the Association, requested Messrs. Hislop and Shrimski to oppose the second reading of the Bill. Mr. Shrimski had sent a reply as follows :

"Wellington, August 15. " My sympathies are in favour of Local Option Bill, though some details of Fox's Bill need amendment. Have no apprehension of Oamaru if Bill carried. " S. E. Shrimski." No reply had as yet been received from Mr. Hislop. He thought it would be a mistake to allow of the sale of spirits by chemists as medical comforts. The chairman then read the rules of the Canterbury L.V. Association. Mr. O'Meagher, who was present at the meeting as legal adviser, was unanimously appointed Solicitor to the Association. Mr. O'Meagher was requested to prepare rules for the Association, includincr one to the effect that the Association was formed in order to suppress-illegal traffic in liquor. ' A vote of thanks to the chairman terminated tha proceedings.
