The Government nre calling for tenders for a four-weekly steam service between Fi'i and Port Chalmers, V'.Y «':iy °f Auckland, Wellington, and Lyttelton, for a period of two years, lhe service to commence about 01 h October next. Bishop Redwood writes to the Times on. behalf of the claims of Catholics in the matter of education. He wants, by supplementary legislation, to give Catholics a grant in aid of schools, on the principle of results and numbers. The last paragraph of his letter says :—" But, it is argued,' if we give Catholics what they want, the others will demand similar arrangements. The answer is plainEither the majority is in favour of a State system, or it 'is not. If the majority be ill favour of it, then there is no fear of stic'i a demand being made, and if it be, then the education J3.1l does not reflect the wishes of the community at large, and ought to be modified.
