SPECIAL TELEGRAMS.

[FROM OUlt OWN CORRESPONDENTS. ] DUNEDiN. THE TRADES' DEMONSTRATION. POLITICAL NEWS. August 6. The trades' demonstration on Saturday evening attracted great attention, and was the largest gathering of the kind ever held in Otago. The various trades formed themselves into a torchlight procession, and, accompanied by two bands, inarched t tiro ugh the principal streets in the city. The public meeting was held in the arcade at Messrs. Guthrie and Larnach's establishment. The Mayor presided, and the meeting probably comprised 3000 people, or perhaps more. The resolutions, published already, were carried unanimously. The speakers were — Messrs. Dungan, representing the Typographical Society ; Hogg, the tailors ; Moss, the engineers ; and Bragg, the carpenters. The Star was roundly abused by all the speakers for stating that some tradesmen got out to the Colony by false representations.

A special to the Times says that Mr. Woolcoclc's motion is to be taken up and discussed seriously, and if the Government oprose it, it will be pressed on to a division, on which it is confidently stated a majority of four or five is certain in its favour. Messrs. Ballance, Bryce, Beet'iam, Stafford, and many other usual supporters of the Government will support Mr. Woolcock's motion.
