TURKISH SUCCESSES. PROSPECT OF CAMPAIGN ENDING AGAINST RUSSIA. DEFEAT OF THE RUSSIANS CONFIRMED. SOOO KILLED. 24,000 WOUNDED. [Agent-General's Telegram. ] London, August 2. The Turks repulsed the Russians at Plevna with great slaughter. Osma Pasha, the new Commander-in-Chief, and Mdiemet Ali are trying to effect a junction. A great battle is hourly expected near Tirnova. The Russians are making great efforts, as a further defeat would destroy communication with Gourke, south of the Balkans, and whose force there would be probably destroyed, and the campaign concluded agiinst Russia. o (From the Piiess Agency.) Sydney, August 4. The HerahVs special from Plevna says that the Russian attack carried the first and second lines of the Turkish position, but they were subsequently driven back by a deadly fire from the Turkisk infantry. The Turks then advanced and recaptured all their positions, slaughtering enormous numberj of the Russians. The Russian force consisted of rive divisions of infantry, three brigades of cavalry, and one hundred and sixty guns. The defeat imperils the Russian position at Tirnova, on the south of tho Balkans. The Russians encountered the forces under Snlieman Bey and Sedifat Eski Sagra on Tuesday, and were repulsed, losing several guns. Bombay, August 2. After twenty-four hours continuous sitting, the African Bill passed the Committee of the House of Commons. Russian reinforcements are advancing from Ardahan. The advance guard is near Pennek. The defeat of the Russians at Plevna is admitted, and the Turkish fore; s are acting on the defensive. Their loss was relatively small. Singapore, August 3, 3 p.m. London advices report the corn market heavy and inactive. Desperate fighting took place for two days at Plevna, and the Russians were completely defeated, with 8000 killed and 24,000 wounded.
