LATEST WAR NEWS. BRITISH REMONSTRANCE. POSITION OF AFFAIRS. RUMORED BRITrSH INTERFERENCE. London, July 21. It is reported that the Porte declines to throw open the Dardanelles to any Power unless it supports the Turks against the Russians. The British Ambassador at St. Petersburgh remonstrated against sinking a vessel in the Danube, and impeding navigation. Ministerialist journals in England state that British interests forbid the entry of the Russians into Stamboul, and urge the Government to declare this without delay. It is believed that Redif Ronouf has been dismissed, as Suliman Bey now commands the Turkish army in Bulgaria. Forty-eight battalions have disembarked at Salonioa, Safet Pasha has been appointed Minister for Public Works. Mali em et Ali succeeds Abdul Kerim, as Commander-in-Chief; Abdul Kerim has been dismissed ; Safet Pasha has resigned. 'Reports of Russian atrocities are semiofficially denied. All the available Turkish troops at Stamboul are ordered to Adrianople. The Russians have occupied Nicopolis. The Russian headquarters are removed to Tirnova. The number of Russians who have crossed the Balkans has been overestimated. Russian despatches . state that after crossing the Balkans the vanguard marched to Kezanlik, whilst the Cossacks occupied Eski-Sagra. The San Francisco mail lias been delivered, July 22. The troopships Crocodile, Malabar, and Euphrates have received orders to be read}'- to proceed to sea on Wednesday. The Russians are besieging gWidin. They have taken Kesnek (Kezanlik and are now marching on Phillipopolis. They were repulsed with heavy lossses at Plevna. A despatch from Muhktar Pasha at Kars states that on the l'Jth the Russians were attacked on the right wing, defeated with heavy loss, and compelled to fall back. It is believed that Midliat Pasha, now in London, will be recalled. The Herald's special states that a panic occurred at Adrianople and Stamboul when it was known that the Russians had crossed the Balkans without opposition. The Bulgarians arc everywhere welcoming the Russians as deliverers. It is rumoured that the English Government intend despatching British troops to Gallipoli. There lias been a formidable railway strike in America. The military were called into action and fired amongst the people, killing 10 and wounding 30. Sydney, July 23. Arrived ; Wakatipu.
