Slowly, but surely, the Russian forces are approaching nearer and nearer the vitals of the "OKI Man of Europe." and any hour may bring with it the .sanguinary struggle that has Ijcmi iiHjjending since the commencement of hostilities. Our to-day's cablegram informs us that IS .Russian battalions (about J 4.4*10 men) have crossed the JJalkau ranges, and have arrived at KskiSagra unor/posed. This town is situated at the southern foot of the Balkan ranges, and contains 20,000 inhabitants. The question naturally arises : How is it that Turkey has allowed the:n to get there ''. There can be no doubt that there is a method in the.'r apparent carelessness, and that Turkey has now enticed the Russian forces into a trap where, by bringing to her aid the Egyptian and her Asiatic forces, she will experience little trouble in making short work of them. Xow comes the "tug of war." A man named Henry Broadhnrst was brought up at the Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday afternoon, on a charge of having, at Maerewhenua, on the 27th April last, embezzled the sum of LG 35., belonging to his former employers, Messrs. Reid and Gray. The accused had been apprehended at Timaru. The hearing of the charge was remanded until the 2b'th inst. At the Resident Magistrate's Court, this morning, an old offender named Michael .Shennau was charged with having been drunk and disorderly in Thames-street last night, and was lined 205., with the option of four days" imprisonment. The hearing of a j number of civil cases comprised the remainder of the business. [
Messrs. Conn ell and Clowes will offer for fale, at noon to-morrow, at their stores, some freehold and leasehold property both in town and country. The postmaster notifies that a second mail will be despatched to Maheno daily at 1.30 p.m. We understand that as soon as it is rendered necessary the other townships as far as Moeraki will be similarly favoured. If the.splendid weather which we have had during the week should only hold up until to-morrow, there should be a large muster of players at the match to be played by the Football Club. The ground will, doubtless, bo in excellent condition, so that tender saplings will run no risk of wetting their feet. An alphabetical match has been arranged between the following players : A to G : Baxter, Booth, Burnett, Caverhill, Carncross, Church, Corliss, Crawford, Bavies, Davidson, G. Fenwick, Ferens, Finch, Filleul, Gow, Grenfell. Ii to Z : Hassel, A. Hardy, Alfred Hardy, Hickey, Holdsworth, Honour, Kerr, M'Glashau, Otterson, .Pickett, Rice, Pi nodes, Tempest, Thompson, Wait, Walls,- Watson, Young. .
