ROAD BOARD CONFERENCE DOINGS. RAILWAY CHANGES. July 18. The resolutions passed by the Road Boards Conference were to the effect that the existing acts relating to Road Boards are in the main satisfactory ; that the Government be requested to embody the Canterbury Roads Ordinance as largely as possible in the contemplated Roads Act ; that there is no necessity for County Councils and Road Boards to have concurrent powers ; that the latter, with extended powers, would be able to carry out economically the functions of County Councils ; that in lieu of County Councils, one member from each Road Board in every Provincial District should meet together at some central place at least twice a year to decide on general questions of administration which affect the whole Provincial District. July 19. The system of selling tickets on railway trains has been established here. Nineteen travelling j ticket-sellers have been appointed. The working hours of clerical employe's on the railways, which was previously from 9.30 to 4.30, have been altered to from 9 to 5, with no extra pay. Further advices from London speak most favourably of the Canterbury marble, and state that it would find a ready market if a reasonable price were charged. The Marble Company |have ascertained that they can ship the marble at a nominal cost as ballast, and so expect to open up a trade with England. W. S. Moorhouse, Esq., M.H.R., addresses his constituents to-night.
