The interruption of the Penang and Madras cable does not interfere irith communication with Europe, as messages can go by Penang and Rangoon. The appointment of a warder and matron for the Oamaui Hospital formed one of the principal items of the business transacted at tht; meeting or the Oamaru Hospital Committee last evening. In all, eleven applications were received from married couples. Of these six were from residents in Oamaru, three from Dunedin, and two from ChrUtcliurch. Nearly the whole of the applicants forwarded a large number of testimonials, and some diiiiculty was experienced in arriving at a decision as to who should be appointed. Eventually the choice of the Committee fill upon Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Thomp on, of 1-unedin. Mr. Thompson is now, and has been for seven years past, a wardsman in the Dunediu Hospital. Mrs. ! houspson has also been three years in the same instituti -n. Both of them were strongly recommended, Mr. 'lhompsou b-.-ing highly spoken of by the whole of the medical attendants of the Dunedin Hospital. We learn that 30 dogs have bean entei'ed for the Waihcmo Coursing Club's Meeting, which takes place to-morrow. The entrance fee to this is L 3 for each dog. A meeting of the Committee entrusted with the carrying o:it of the ploughing match at Macrewheuua wis held on Saturday evening last at M'Kenzie's hotel, Maerewhemui. It was decided to adhere to the programme of last year. A Working Committee was appointed to select the ground and lay it out, and the judges were choe:i. It wa determine 1 that the match should take place on Friday, August 10, and the next Committee meeting was fixed for the Ist August, when the prize-l.st wiil be a; ranged. The half-yearly meeting of the members of the North Otago Turf Club was held last evening at the Empire Hotel. There was only a small number present. Mr. Steward occupied the chair. The- minutes having been read and confirmed, the balance-sheet was read and adopted. '1 his showed that the receipts had been L 1,152 10s. 2d, and the expenditure LI, 197 13s. 41., leaving an indebtedness to the bank of Llo 3s. 2d. ; theie were still moneys due to the Club to the amount of 1.80, while the outstanding lia! ihties were shown to be under LH). The assets were put down at L4l<> Is., and the liabilities (including the bank overdraft) at L"i J :;-=. 2d. In reply to Mr. Wheatley, the Chairman stated that rules 0" and 9 had been amended at a special meeting called for the purpose, the number of the Committee being thus increased to I~>, instead of 10, as was originally the case. Mr. Wheatley expressed his disapproval of the action taken. Some discus*!'>n then took place about some informality with regard to the non-proposal of certain members, during which Mr. Wheatley spoke pretty st ong'y against the principle of admit' iog a cert, i:t class of persons as members of the Club, and said it appeared to him that it was money tint was sought after and not the respectabi ity of its members. The omission was ordered to be rectified, and the meeting terminated with the usual of thanks to the Chairman.
