DUNEDIN. DEFERRED PAYMENT LAND UNFIT FOR USE. A DRUNKEN ASSAULT. July 4. At the meeting of the Waste Lands Board, to-day, Warden Simpson reported at great length on the deferred pavnicnt of agricultural leasing blocks in the Teviot district. His report shows that none of the land hitherto set apart is fit for th« purpose, and is of such a character as to render it impossible for the settlers to comply with the conditions of the Act; and that in consequence they resort to all kinds of shifts to get rid of their responsibilities. Though threo blocks of 5000 acres each have already been opened up on run 199, only 220 acres have as yet been put under cultivation. July 5. At Queenstown, a bootmaker named Andtrson has been committed for trial for a most drunken assault on a labourer named Ryan.
The women charged with child abandonment were acquitted, the Bench being divided as to their guilt. The Drill Shed reserve has been soldj b;
»y auction, producing a rental of LSBB a year from the quarter aero, which represents, at the current rate of interest, a purchase value equivalent to L 30,000 per acre. Mr. Proudfoot was the principal purchaser.
