LOST HAT.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE EVENING MAIL. Sir,—l do not understand the motive of the person who put the advertisement in your columns of yesterday's date re a "hat lost," with reference to a Mr. Macpherson, treasurer of the Y. M. A. I am not accustomed to such peculiar lo"ic as our friend advances in support of ]ii3 assumption that a member of the Y. M. A. of Oamaru should be guilty of such a grave offence as taking his new hat. Our friend's reasoning seems to be as follows : He lost a hat; it was lost at a social meetin"' of the members and friends — ergo, a member took it. The advertisement is utterly useless for the purpose intended, as the member is asked to return it to its disconsolate owner, but is left entirely in the dark as to who the owner might be. If the unfortunate individul who lost his new hat knows positively that a member took it, he must either know by intuition, by sight, or by hearsay. Certainly not by the first—not by the second, and if by hearsay, let me inform him that he should not make such a grave assertion without even the shadow of a proof. But it is evident from his reference to Mr. Macpherson for a pecuniary reward, that he intends to be funny, and if so, he strongly reminds me of " the mountain that laboured and brought forth a ridiculous mouse."—l am, etc., Yeritas. Oamaru, June 25th, 1877. o TO THE EDITOR OF THE EVENING MAIL. Sir,—l am very much annoyed at the advertisement which appeared in j'our columns last night with my name signed as the advertiser. Now, sir, I never knew of such an advertisement until I saw it in print, and, of course, did not authorise the putting of my name to such a fool : .sh piece of scribbling ; and I hope the person who composed the advertisement will be good enough to make the amende honorable. —l am, &c, E. H. M'Pherson. June 29th, 1877.
