The majority of the matter in this evening's is.-ue consists of telegraphic news—a great portion of which has not previously been published—of so interesting a nature that we have given it preference over a kvge quantity of other mat-tor. which we hope to be able to insert to-morrow. A meeting of the Calcined Corkonians will be held this evening at the Mail Office at S o'e'ick, for the purpose of finally arranging a programme for a concert to be given almost immediately for the benefit of the Hospit.il. V\ T e are informed that new talent has promised its assistance on the occasion. It is requested that members will be in attendance at S sharp this evening.
Mails for Sycluey per Hero will close at Auckland at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, 2dth inst. We regret to state that Mr. Alex. Scott, of Jfo-anara, who purchased the boardinghouse lately known as "Craig's" on Saturday, with the intention of carrying on the hus : :■:.■:■}, died last night from what is supposed to have been apoplexy. He leaves a family to mourn his loss. We understand that an inquest is to be held. The Gaiety Company gave their farewell entertainment at the Masonic Hall on Saturday last. The farce of the '' Wandering Miustrel" and a musical melange constituted the programme, and the performance, which was largely attended, appeared to give general satisfaction. Only one case came before the notice of his Worship the Resident Magistrate this morning : Edv.-ard Sherman, charged with being drunk and disorderly in Thames-street at 2 o'clock on Sunday morning, who was on bail, and did no tapper when called upon. The evidence of Constable Johnston having been taken, the accused was fined in the amount of his bail (iOs.). A Court for the revision of the Ratepayers' Roll for the Waitaki County was held at the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning by T. W. Parker, Esq., Revising Officer. The only business done was the erasure of the names of Messrs. Wm. Young and W. C. Wade, and the insertion of the names of Messrs. W. J. Steward and W. H. Tescliemaker. The Oamaru Eaths Committee have decided not to accept any of the tenders for the construction of the baths, the amounts being greatly in excess of the estimated cost. At the meeting of the Committee on Saturday, the following were opened :—Mason work—Hector Munro, LG7S 19s. ; H. B. Hook, LG4S; Hugh Barclay, L6lO. Carpenter work—John Clegg, L 690. WUoic [works—E. Rowland, 112C9. It was resolved, "That none of these be accepted, but that the plans be referred back to the architect to be reduced in cost, by omitting part of the dressing-rooms, and such work as can for a time be dispensed with, and that such amended plans be submitted to the Committee at a meeting to be held to consider the same on Friday next, at four [o'clock."
